Construction
The City of Rome Streets and Drainage Department's construction and paving crews maintain the 267 centerline miles of asphalt within the City that link interstate commerce in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. They are responsible for repairing, patching, and resurfacing these roadways as well as any sidewalks located within the City limits.
Right-of-Way
The right-of-way crews are responsible for mowing and weeding the right-of-ways bordering City streets as well as keeping the storm drainage systems clear and free-flowing to minimize the hazards of flooding.
Severe Weather
During severe weather events, the Streets and Drainage crews are the first responders to ensure city streets are clear, safe for travel, and accessible to emergency vehicles. Whether they are de-icing streets in the winter or clearing downed trees during tornado season, crews are on call 24/7 during and after severe weather events.
Special Projects
In recent years, the Streets and Drainage Department have also played a key role in many special projects such as the construction of the Streetscape in downtown Rome, the development of Ridge Ferry Park and the Clock tower Hill site restoration. We also assist and support both the Engineering Services and the Traffic Department as needed.
Responsibilities
Other responsibilities include the following:
- Approval of curb cuts for new residential driveways
- Assisting with various events such as road races, and concerts
- Maintaining walking trails Inspection and maintenance of retention ponds
- Repair and maintenance and inspection of sidewalks
